[Product Review] Tico Bricks!

If there's something that can keep me away from spending too much time on the computer and mobile phone, it has to be this.

And I am sure you guys will love this new product as much as I do ; especially after reading this post.

TICO BRICKS!!!!

If you are wondering what Tico Bricks are, they are actually small bricks (measuring at only 3.9mm x 3.9mm x 4.9mm) that you can build many cute things out of them. They have many series that feature different themes, one of which the latest one is the Amusement Park series!

I was really thrilled when the lovely folks from Play Distribution had kindly sent me a set of Tico Brick from the Amusement Park series over for the review. It took me a long time before finally selecting the Ferris Wheel design because EVERY single one looks so adorable!

Initially, I was not sure if my patience would lead me to complete it as it does seem complicated to build - but hey, I DID and was even so engrossed in it that I did not realise that the time was passing so fast.

I have documented my process to share with you guys, and I do think it's pretty amazing to see the bricks taking form with each step! (Please pardon me if the photos are not very well-taken as I was literally making and taking the photos all by myself at the same time)

What's inside the box: - 

Two packets of small bricks, two bigger square bricks that are meant to be the "grass patch", and one instruction manual (step-by-step)

As the bricks are pretty small, I had to be careful and ensured that I had everything in place inside the box. 

                                 

 Let's begin by connecting the two "grass patch"together!

Every brick here was joined together after referring to the instruction manual (Don't worry, the manual is very clear-cut. All you have to do is follow step by step)

And here was the first step done! Still looking nothing like a Ferris wheel yet...

Slowly... Omg, see the colourful-looking small blocks there? Those were actually meant to be human figures that would soon be admiring a Ferris wheel before them. SO CUTE, RIGHT?!?!

And 4 trees were planted...

You know the feeling of building something using your own bare hands? I was enjoying every single minute of this.

It's starting to take shape now!! *squeals in delight*

And here came the crucial part of the bricks. I had to build the "rod"first before attaching it to the main parts.

Build 4 of the same "rods" and we have this:

  I would say the MOST difficult part would be putting this set of bricks together to form a circle for the wheel. I spent quite a lot of time on this part as the position of the bricks kept shifting when I accidentally touched it while I was trying to secure them during the process. 

There were 3 layers of bricks here to secure them- and it was pretty good at this stage as the bricks were nicely fitted.

After completing the wheel, I placed it aside to build the "carriages".  Each "carriage"is a different shade of colour and there are 14 of them in total. This part would require a bit of time too as the bricks would not be really secure until they have been fitted to the wheel.

 Arrange the "carriages" nicely together and combine it with the wheel that was built earlier..

Ta-da! Here we have it.

Now I've gotta join this part to the first one that I did. Gosh. Gosh. I got so anxious that my hand was trembling in excitement. I JUST COULD NOT WAIT to see the Ferris wheel taking full shape.

AND TA-DA... PRESENTING TO YOU THE FINAL PRODUCT..  I HAD FINALLY, FINALLY COMPLETED IT. 

I am not trying to exaggerate, but I could feel tears of joy when I saw the full form of the Ferris wheel. Did I... Did I... just build it myself?!

The sense of achievement is too overwhelming.

AND DID I MENTION THAT THE WHEEL IS ACTUALLY MOVABLE??! I know I may have said this a thousand times, but THIS IS TOO CUTE.

If you guys are fans of bricks building too, I am 100 PERCENT positive that you will love what Tico Brick have to offer. I admit I got hooked to my first set that I am considering to purchase more.

Here's a happy me with my Ferris wheel.

If you were to ask me what do I love most about it, I would definitely comment on its quality. The bricks are really defined - not those cheap and fragile kind. (I read that the bricks are actually originated and manufactured in Taiwan which are made of toxic-free Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene 

(ABS) plastic. Whoa, chim... but if you feel the material physically, I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised by its quality, too)

Most importantly, the final product will be something that you can be proud of. 

Different series have different level of difficulty - but the completion will certainly give you a sense of achievement. This may sound hilarious, but I admired my Ferris wheel so much that I spent almost  five minutes staring at it in awe.

New cover released!

I just released a new cover last week! - 告白气球


In all honesty, I did not expect myself to be covering this song (I am not a Jay Chou fan and have never sung a Jay Chou song in my whole life)

Somehow, this song was stuck in my head and people everywhere were humming to it.

So here it is - My version of it. Pardon the imperfection as this was just a casual recording.

So you want a bottle of Chun Cui He (純萃喝)... ...

I am sure many of you are familiar with the recent launch and craze of one of Taiwan's most well-received bottled drinks - Chun Cui He (純萃喝) in Singapore.

In case you are not aware, here is how the drinks look like: -

(There are currently only two flavors being released in SG - Classic Milk Tea and Latte flavors ONLY at selected 7-11 outlets)

Unsurprisingly, Singaporeans were so hyped about their landing in Singapore that some even woke up as early as 3 am to 5 am in the morning to get them. (Are you freaking serious???)

As if that isn't kiasu enough, they even unleashed their "kampung spirit" power and showed off their victory on Facebook, claiming that these were bought on behalf of their families, relatives, friends, uncle, auntie, bla bla bla.

And that is why, my dear fellow fans of the drink, that many of you are not able to get them in stores as intended. Despite the fact that you think you are early enough at 7 am or 8am in the morning, there will still be kiasu people *points to the above picture* that will always beat you to it.

The fact that there is no rules, regulations or limitations set will easily enable ONE or TWO person to sweep the entire rack. Believe it or not, there are people who would purchase ALL of the existing stocks without leaving any chance for others. (Mind you, there are only limited stocks at the outlets. Some imported only 10 of each flavor, while other outlets probably only slightly more) If you think you still have a chance, then I suggest you don't pin your hopes too high.

Like many typical others, I was one of those who tried luck at different 7-11 outlets during the initial launch but to no avail. All the 7-11 staff could be seen in an exasperated mode as their common line would be "No more milk tea". 

In almost all of the outlets I happened to go to, I would spot people checking out the fridges and leaving the store empty-handed.

And just yesterday, there was someone asking if he could purchase in a bulk of 100. 

It's ridiculous, because people are actually cashing in on the opportunity to sell the milk tea at a marked-up price: -

A recent search on the Shopee app with keywords "Taiwan mik tea" will grant you the results with people selling each bottle at $4.00 (Usual retail price: $2.80)

YES, they know that there will be desperate people who are willing to purchase it. 

This is inevitable because if people are willing to buy it, what else more can we say?

Not sure if this is a troll, but there are people selling a drank, empty bottle of it at $1 on Carousell.

You've got to be kidding me.

The things people do to cash in on the craze. *rolls eyes*

But guess what?!

Thanks to my dear best friends (Pei wen and Abrial), they got one for me just yesterday as they chanced upon outlets that had them when most were already out of stock! Thank you, girls!

AND here's a picture to those kiasu people out there. Back at you, suckers. BACK AT YOU.

(Before people start lashing out at me that I bought many bottles like those kiasu people, let me clarify that those bottles are a combination of mine and my friends - I just wanted to troll!)

It's only a matter of time before the craze goes away - just like how the Hello Kitty craze from Macdonalds' did.

It's always a vicious cycle, people will always be seen flocking down to join the craze - and months later, whatever it is will just be another ordinary food or drink.

P/S: To those who are wondering how did we manage to get the drinks when they were already labelled as being out of stock on the official site, it's just a matter of strategic thinking and chance! We found them at the Raffles Place MRT outlet on a weekend and there were still quite a number of bottles. I believe this is due to the fact that not many people frequent Raffles Place on a weekend because it was a non-working day. The staff had mentioned that the stocks would be easily wiped out fast on a typical working weekday! So there you go.

So there's a recent uproar of a guy who blatantly insulted Singaporeans sometime back (but it appears that he has taken down the post already. Guilty much?)
I'm sure this face would not be unfamiliar to many (If you are an avid Facebooker, I'm sure you would've seen one or two of his *appalling* pictures somewhere...)

The perfect definition of Photoshop.
In case you are wondering, yes, they are of the same person.

Just a brief introduction about him (if you are not aware) - He's simply someone who gained fame through insulting people from time to time. As long as you are human, there's a possibility of you being insulted by him because he thinks he is more superior than everyone else.

Yes, he's none other than 刘梓晨 (otherwise infamously known as "蛇精男")

One of his proudest "assets" would be the infamous chin, which many netizens claimed that it could pierce through anything and cause imminent death.

You know, it's really amusing to see the delusional world this guy has crafted for himself. 

I'm not sure if this guy is for real - but one thing I'm positive of is that he has successfully became an international joke.

[Review] WheeloveSpree - Overseas Online shopping made easy!!!

If you are a mega online shopaholic like me, I suppose you would have heard of shopping sites such as Taobao, Amazon, etc.

(In case you haven't, those are overseas shopping sites)

Yes, many of the items are SO, SO superbly and unbelievably cheap  that it is IMPOSSIBLE not to be tempted. Unfortunately, it wasn't really an easy process trying to ship them over and the shipping fees would easily cost more than the items themselves.  It didn't help that online transactions can be a real hassle, and some sellers stubbornly DO NOT ship to Singapore despite how badly I wanted to purchase items from them. *(#*$()#*$

*starts hurling vulgarities*

"WHY AREN'T THOSE SELLERS BASED IN SINGAPORE?!?! WHY??!" I would often ask myself in agony.

I have wished for a simpler solution to these.
....

It was not until I heard of agent services that seem to be the best solution for struggling shoppers like me.

 I just simply have to make direct payment to the agent via local banking and they will take care of the processes.

In other words, they act as a local middleman by helping me to purchase the items and have them shipped over to me safe and sound. It's like having someone to oversee and take care of my overseas transaction!!

Honestly, I had my doubts and reservations initially as I wasn't sure if everything was as easy as it sounded. I felt it was important for me to find out how it works.
As the saying goes, "You never try, you never know", right?

I have put one such agent service to the test - So now ... Let's see.

This review is based on my personal experience and I have attempted to record down my processes (from Day 1 when I placed my orders to the day I received my package)

When I entered the site, the first thing I did was to study how the flow works. Apparently, it seemed easy.

I was damn excited when I came to know that they are able to provide shipping from various countries as well (China, U.S, Taiwan, Korea, Japan...) I need not worry about the limitations of sellers, too! 

Being a frequent Taobao window-shopper, I decided to shop for my loots there through WheeloveSpree and see how it would go.

Personally, I would come up with shopping lists and make multiple purchases so that they can be shipped together at one shot. It's more worth it this way as its like combined shipping!

After much browsing around the site (I almost fainted from all the chinese words), I decided to get a MP3 player (for my dad), microSD card and 3 apparels.

So the next step... Entering order details on the agent site, WheeloveSpree! 

The instructions listed on their site are pretty clear and clear-cut. 

Just ensure that you enter your details correctly!

My item order details - I entered my 4 items accordingly into the list.

After submission of my orders (I was quite excited at this point), I received an e-mail on the same day with the calculated cost.

 I love it how everything appears to be so simple and transparent - I could see clearly what I was paying for. 

The stated SGD78.41 was considered my first amount to be transferred to WheeloveSpree as part of my purchase confirmation. 

I guess it somehow acts like a deposit. 

Afterwhich, they would proceed to place my orders with the merchants and all I needed to do was to SIT BACK AND WAIT FOR MY ITEMS TO BE ON THEIR WAY!! =D 

I waited for approximately 2 weeks (can't be blamed as my items were all from different China merchants and I guess it probably took time for those deliveries before they were eventually sent to Singapore)

When I was informed that my items were finally on their way, I was so thrilled.

And YES, did I mention that WheeloveSpree has one of the best customer services ever?!

I received a revised calculation of the total cost via e-mail indicating that I have overpaid during my first payment and I would be refunded accordingly.

(If let's say my first payment was underpaid, I would be required to top up. BUT since I paid more than I should during the estimated calculation of my first payment, I would get a refund.) 

I was shown the breakdown of final cost: -

So it all boils down to anticipating the arrival of my items now!

Going Taiwan the Free & Easy Way!

Finally - All hail my Taiwan trip! 

Well, it wasn't my first time going Taiwan (my first trip was through tour); but I realized that I did not benefit much in terms of experience joining a group tour.

Imagine getting up so early in the morning, touring around everywhere with limited time constraint, being brought to places that you have no intention of going but YET have to according to the fixed itinerary, etc.

So this time, my family decided to go FREE & EASY (F&E)!

We snagged a good deal on the Scoot website (Damn, I woke up early specially to book the air tickets as they have special promotion from 7am to 9am). It cost us only less than $300 for two-way tickets! Cheap or what?!

Of course, going the Free & Easy way has its pros and cons as well. There will be no tour guide looking after you, and you'll have to do your own research to find out ways of navigating around the country. In short, you have to create an itinerary for yourself and find out places that interest you.

I did intensive research and read tons of blogs for places that others went to; so somehow I came up with my own version which I'll share on my blog here (Come on, I am not selfish! I share because I care! Haha)

I hope that my blog post will be beneficial to anyone who will be traveling to Taiwan!

However, please do note that some of the photos are not of top notch quality as they were taken using my mobile phone (It was RAINING almost everyday and I could not take out my precious DSLR to capture the moments! :( )

So here was my Day 1 - Nan Ya Night Market (南雅夜市)

My first day of Taipei was quite "wasted" as I reached there around evening time, definitely not enough to tour around much except for the night market that is situated near my apartment!

(I called it an apartment because I did NOT really stay in a hotel. In Taiwan, they called it "Min Su". It's much more cheaper; but has its pros and cons as well. Do read on to find out more!)

In preparation for this Taiwan trip, I did quite a number of advanced bookings online; including car transportation to and fro from airport to my apartment.

I feel that it is essential to book in advance as it is freaking expensive to hail for a cab from Taoyuan airport to Taipei. A single trip can easily cost up to NT 1000 to NT 1,200 via cab.

With advanced booking of a car, each single trip only cost me NT 750 - which is considered VERY CHEAP. In fact, its the cheapest fare that I found after so much intensive research.

Of course, if you are one that really want to save the money, take the bus. (BUT IT IS GOING TO BE QUITE A HASSLE AND TIME CONSUMING. IT MAY TAKE UP TO around 2 HOURS TO REACH TAIPEI)

The driver who picks you up may or may not be Mr Zhao; but be rest assured that your transport will be well taken care of after making arrangements through him! I can vouch for his professionalism. The driver that was arranged for us is VERY punctual. 

Oh yes, did I mention that it is essential to get a SIM card at the airport, too? There are different stations catering to such mobile services situated within the airport (you will be able to spot them easily; but in case you don't - just ask around and the staff members around the area will be able to point you to the right direction! Don't worry, Taiwanese people are extremely friendly) I am advising everyone to get their local SIM card (it comes with different packages and you can choose which suit you best. I chose the 7-day package and it cost me around SGD 20) as data roaming may kill you! From what I know, Singtel charges $25 per MB if you decide to use your own's.

By purchasing their local SIM card, you can just pay a flat rate of $20 and enjoy UNLIMITED data usage throughout the journey!

So the unfortunate happened while we were on our way to Taipei. It was raining :(

It took us around 40 minutes to reach Fu Zhong (near Ban Qiao) area where my apartment was.

Oversleep Taipei (台北睡過頭小窩)

LOL, sounds funny, I know. But trust me - They offer one of the cheapest rates here with around SGD 70+ per night! Honestly, most hotels in Taipei are not cheap and easily cost up to SGD 80 & above.

So what is the difference between staying in an apartment and a hotel, you ask?

Well, basically you do your own chores. There is no room service, no daily bedsheet changing or whatsoever. It's like renting a room and you have it all to yourself. However, the apartment is designed exclusively like a hotel! Basic necessities such as washing machine, mineral water, towels, slippers, etc are provided. If you happen to run out of anything or require certain services, there is still someone to contact and he will see to it.

So I called the in-charge upon reaching the venue. He came down to fetch us with an umbrella and boy, was he friendly!

From carrying my dad's luggage to guiding us around the area, I felt at ease. 

After explaining and showing us around the apartment which we would be staying for the next 6 days, we were handed the keys and voila!! We could finally unpack our luggage and begin our Free & Easy journey in Taipei!

By the time we were done with our unpacking for the night, we felt really exhausted and hungry. Fortunately for us, our apartment is located at a VERY convenient location. Stores such as 7-11, Family Marts and even night market are all within walking distance.

(Did I mention that it is only a 3-min walk to the MRT station, too?!)

However, we were really tired and ended up "anyhow" entering random food places that we came across.

We settled for a restaurant-like place known as "No Name" (LOL) and ordered random vegetables with rice.

Guess what I ordered:

YES, its 臭豆腐 (Stinky Tofu)! :)

Something that is rare in Singapore but common in Taiwan - I am so digging this!

Of course, not everyone finds the smell or taste acceptable (my mum almost vomited). Personally, I LOVE it so much and don't find it smelly at all.

There are 2 kinds of Stinky Tofus that you'll be able to spot in Taiwan - Wet and dry ones. I'm fine with both!

Looking through the window, I spot something familiar.

Is that... Partyworld?!?!

One of the activities that I planned for my Taiwan tour was to visit their karaoke lounges. I have heard of how Taiwanese people love singing; and I was so eager to try out their karaoke systems!

Unfortunately, I did not try out the services at their Partyworld as the rates are VERY expensive. I tried another karaoke lounge during my 6th day (Do stay tuned to my blog if you are interested to hear about it!)

So I basically ended my Day 1 at Taipei just like that. 

During Day 2, I got my parents to purchase the Easycard - 悠遊卡(it's like our local Ez-link card) with NT 500. Trust me, it's an essential thing to do if you are intending to travel free & easy around Taipei. By getting an Easycard, you are actually saving alot on transportation cost if you are depending on the MRT, bus, railway trains to travel around the city. 

The Easycard can be purchased at all MRT control stations and even 7-11 stores as well! I'll say its worth it because any unused amount can be refunded with only 20 NT processing fee deducted.

Alternatively, you may choose to keep it and not having it refunded if you are planning to re-visit Taiwan again. If I am not wrong, the card does not have expiry! :)

Wu Fen Pu is one of the well-known places in Taipei that sell cheaper stuff. They are wholesalers and have sales racks - If you are lucky, you can snag a beautiful dress at only NT 100 (which is around SGD 4.20 only!) I managed to get a few really nice apparels at a price that is impossible in Singapore.

To get to Wu Fen Pu, you will have to take the MRT to Hou Shan Pi MRT station:

(I find that their trains are actually quite similar to Singapore's, but more comfy and spacious!)

Before visiting Wu Fen Pu, I took my parents to settle our lunch at Hu Xu Zhang Ru Rou Fan (鬍鬚張魯肉飯), one of the famous braised pork rice stores in Taipei. My colleagues introduced this place and highly recommended it; so I was kinda' thrilled as my dad is a huge fan of braised pork rice!

Seee.. It was raining again - The floor was all wet!

The rice comes in two sizes - Small and Big.  (Only around $1 and $2 ?!?!)

I don't think the small bowl is enough if you are a huge eater or one with enormous appetite; so just go ahead with the big size!

I'm going to post some seriously appetite-inducing pictures, so beware - I am not responsible for any saliva dripping from your mouth! LOL.

Go Google it, I think its called Formosa Chang in english. :) You'll discover that there are positive reviews about this gem almost everywhere! Highly popular place, I would say.

We headed to Wu Fen Pu next, and unfortunately... I couldn't capture many nice photographs on that one as it was raining darn heavily. Seriously, it was a total mood-spoiler. 

I still managed to shop (in an uncomfortable way, though). Got two beautiful dresses at only around $4.20 each which was a damn good steal!

My parents found a little "cafe" near a temple there - and we sat down to have our tea while waiting for the rain to stop.

I bought a cute apparel for my famous teddy from Wu Fen Pu.

(He is supposed to be a guy, but well... just take it as cross-dressing *rolls eyes*)

I got another piece that is really fluffy and cute!! Unfortunately, it is too big for him :(

I had to sell it away to a friend.
